What unnerves us deep within is something we often hold close to our chests, afraid someone will see and use it against us.
Too often, we’re right. For so many years of my writing career, I feared submitting my work—worried about the response it would get. So often it was negative. People told me I didn’t write horror. Editors said my characters had thought processes that didn’t make sense and publishers said stylistic choices I made caused them to not connect with the story. So I self-published my first two short story collections. Because I believed in those characters, their decisions, their thought processes—and my stylistic choices. I was terrified, but I crawled through those fears and have been able to subsequently publish stories with several wonderful magazines, some of which had previously given me my earliest rejections. This collection houses some of those short stories and one new novella, ranging from Southern Gothic to weird fiction to dark fantasy, finally culminating in a tale to lift a little of the darkness. These stories utilize methods many editors will tell you don’t work: second-person point of view, inactive protagonists, the use of dialect . . . all hallmarks of my people’s storytelling traditions. Who Lost, I Found is Black Southern horror, encompassing Gullah Geechee folklore, ancestry, warnings, conjure, survival, and celebration of enduring for a night. Some of these stories are grounded in truth, others in fantasy, but they are all valid aspects of storytelling.
